1. What Do You Want to Write About?

Before you even start your blog you need to know what you want to write about. Do you only want to write about college? How about makeup, fashion, or lifestyle? The sky really is the limit for blogging niches. My blog focuses on three topics: college, beauty, and lifestyle. Having a general idea for some posts to start out with will give you that extra head start that you need to be successful. That isn’t to say that you need to stick with the same niche forever, that’s the fun thing about having your own blog–it can grow with you!

2. Self-Hosted WordPress

As a college student, you’re probably on a budget. You’re probably thinking you should just start with a free account to get started to save money. But, if you want to make money off your blog in any way, you should just start out with a self-hosted blog.

You’ll need to have a domain name picked out as well. You can check here if the one your thinking of is available. I think it’s important to pick a name that will grow with you as well. This is a blog, but it can also be used to showcase your skills to employers.

WordPress is the leading blog platform and the one I personally use. It’s really easy to get started with, especially with Bluehost. With Bluehost, you can get your blog hosting for as little as $3.95 a month. This includes hosting, domain, and 1-click WordPress installation. It doesn’t get much easier than this. Before you check out I recommend checking out with Ebates. This way you can get cash back on your purchase and save even more money!

Now that you have your blog, it’s time to start posting! The great thing about having a blog in college is it can be done in your free time. I write posts between classes, on weekends, on breaks, whenever I find the time.

Photos are an important part of having a blog. I started out taking photos on my iPhone, and that’s how I did it for well over a year until upgrading to a camera. You have to find the way that works best for you.
